Sample

The current sample is a disproportionate quota sample comprising 1,918 households.

The sample covers the different linguistic regions on a disproportionate basis, i.e. its coverage of Italian and French-speaking Switzerland is greater in comparison to the number of inhabitants in both these regions than its coverage of German-speaking Switzerland. In addition, a number of sparsely populated areas in German and French-speaking Switzerland are subject to boost samples, i.e. a disproportionally high coverage of persons and households to ensure an adequate sampling rate in the regions in question.

During the recruitment process, the following quota criteria are applied in each linguistic area: household size, age of person running household, household with/without children.

Furthermore, Switzerland is sub-divided into different zones ("elementary zones") within which recruitment is coordinated. The 25 elementary zones were defined by overlapping the current licensing areas and language boundaries. Guidelines apply in terms of how many households need to be recruited in each elementary zone. Irrespective of the aforementioned boost samples, the number of households is proportional to the population size (pertaining to TV research) of the elementary zone in question. This specific application of quotas is coordinated separately for each linguistic region.
