Radio
The instrument Mediawatch provides the industry with radio-listening metrics in Switzerland. It is the accepted standard.
It captures the live radio listening of the adult population of Switzerland. According to the latest time budget survey, live radio (incl. Internet streaming) accounts for 98% of all radio listening. Unfortunately it is not yet possible to record the amount of use via Internet streaming. This share, and the shares of other use via alternative channels or platforms such as radio on demand or listening to podcasts, which is not recorded by radio research, is collected with the New Establishment Survey and the Time Use Study.
In the medium term we are aiming for single-source measurement by the Mediawatch to capture all significant platforms. To this end, the system is undergoing permanent development. The first priority here is the capture of Internet radio.
Radio usage data is collected today:
- everywhere, because the measuring device is portable, we can capture radio listening no matter where the participants are.
- passively, a measuring device doesn't rely on people remembering which radio station they were tuned into. All the participants have to do is wear the measuring devices.
- by a semi-permanent/rolling panel
- around the clock, 365 days a year, minute by minute
Radio research by an electronic measuring device was introduced in 2001. Before that, media usage was determined by means of a continuous face-to-face study (--> Media Study).
