Since 1985 quantitative TV consumption in Switzerland is determined by means of Telecontrol, an electronic measuring system.

It is used to measure three representative samples of TV households in German-speaking, French-speaking and Italian-speaking Switzerland. The data obtained from the panel households is processed and added to a database on a daily basis and prepared for evaluation by special analytical software.
Telecontrol research is carried out by GfK Telecontrol AG, Kriegstetten (provision and maintenance of measuring devices) and GfK Switzerland, Hergiswil (panel operations and data processing).

The independent Medienwissenschaftliche Kommission (MWK) checks on an ongoing basis that the research is methodically correct.
